Where To Go When Cycling In Europe

Posted on November 14, 2011 by Dave W

As a cyclist one is always looking for new jaunts. Cycling in Europe can be a vastly enjoyable experience whose memory can last forever. In this respect a list of nice places to visit when on a cycling hiatus will not go amiss. The initial place to visit is of course Greece. The Peloponnese would be ideal for just this purpose. If you get tired of the terrain then you can do Sparta instead. All the while sampling the spicy dishes of Greece.

Should you yearn for more variety then the Picos de Europa in Spain would be ideal for you instead. In Spain most people would opt for the Pyrenees but this is not to mean that you should not try Picos. This is simply because the scenery is breathtaking and the weather adds to it when it is not too wet.

Nobody can say they cycled in Europe if they have not been to The Dolomites in Italy. This view is shared by the cyclists competing in the Giro d Italia tour who also choose it because of its capital the Cortina d Ampezzo. If the balmy country is not to your liking you could choose the contrasting English countryside instead. Roads here are rarely used by drivers and the terrain is not bumpy.

Yet another cycling destination in the UK is the South Downs. The best thing about this area is the lack of motorists. It has both steep hills and a less steep side. Paths that branch out of the ridges make for perfect riding.

Ireland should not be left behind in this guide. The country has enough cycling heroes to its name to warrant a mention. Not only does it have cycling champions but its country is known for awesome riding opportunities. The western area of the country is well used to the cyclists and the Beara, Iveragh and Dingle islands in the country make for ideal riding spots.

Surprisingly, Belgium is a spot that is well suited to cycling expeditions. Anyone who knows of the Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege will tell you so. One can only imagine that the cobbled hills of the country and the scenery are what are alluring about it. For scenery follow the Liege route and for athleticism the Ardennes are what you want.

As a matter of tradition the Alps must be mentioned too. Even the dimmest of characters have heard of the Tour de France which happens in this locale. Other places of note are the Alpe d Huez, the Col de Galibier, and the Col d Izoard that may not be as rough but will still not leave you wanting for anything.

The Pyrenees in France are also a popular destination for cyclists. The climb is lower than the others but is still a challenge because of the steepness. While there one can try the Col d Aspin and the Col du Tourmalet for size.

Though there are possibly many other cycling places in Europe, the places mentioned herein will not come short of a pleasant experience. Armed with your bicycle and your water bottle there are countless other places for cycling in Europe. The continent will not lack places for one to park their bicycle.

Where to go in Catalunya to go cycling and enjoy the outdoors?

I’m searching for a nice place to go hiking and cycling this coming May in Catalunya and I’m going mad looking at so many websites – it seems everyplace is so nice – if you have been there so tell me about the fantastic places you’ve visted, thanks!

Answer
There are lots of places but it all depends on your abilities.

The Pyrenees and Montseny are great but I can also recommend inland from Tarragona..Scala Dei and the Sierras around Prades.

Try cycling around Barcelona on Sunday morning.

For wimps there is the promenade from Salou to Cambrills.
