Walk Your Way to Great Legs
Posted on July 13, 2010 by Dave W
Most of us do it each and every day of our lives around the house while cleaning, around the office, around school. Of course, we’re talking about walking and it is a form of exercise that pretty much anyone can do, no matter what their level of fitness is. But if you are not used to exercising regularly, you may want to start out walking slowly and only for a few minutes at a time. Once your muscles and joints are used to the work, you will want to add time to your walks, as well as speed up your walking, to continue getting all of the benefits that walking has to offer.
Getting Into a Routine
Sure, you can say “I’ll start walking tomorrow,” but for many of us who say this, tomorrow never comes. But if you set up a schedule and get into a regular routine, you will have more of an incentive to go out and do some walking. You don’t have to do much at first but even a five-minute walk is a whole lot better than no walk at all. Always make sure that part of your routine is warm-up stretches, as well as a few minutes after your walk for a cool-down. Warm-up exercises can help to prevent injuries and they also help to increase flexibility. A warm-up should take about five minutes and you should be walking for around 20 minutes once you have gotten to that level. Once you finish your walk, you should allow another five minutes for cooling down.
Unconventional Places to Walk
You know, you don’t have to limit yourself to just taking walks in your neighborhood every day. There are all kinds of unconventional places you can walk and you will get a lot more exercise if you also do your regular walk. If you work in a multi-story building, instead of taking the elevator all the time, why not take the stairs instead. You will be getting an excellent workout. Or, instead of driving to work, if you live reasonably close, why not walk instead? You are getting extra exercise and helping the environment at the same time by not using your vehicle. If you really sit down and think about it, there are all kinds of ways that you can walk. You walk all day long anyway, so why not start walking a little bit more and see just how firm and tones your legs are going to get.
