RV Parks Around Hells Canyon, Idaho
Posted on September 30, 2010 by Dave W
Hells Canyon in Idaho provides you with a variety of exciting choices, including several parks with RV access. According to online Idaho outdoors resource Go-Idaho.com, Hells Canyon National Recreation Area features 36 campgrounds, many of which offer RV access but lack amenities. Travel guide website GoNorthwest.com states the greater Hells Canyon area offers more than 100 campgrounds open to travelers but notes that several of these sites feature remote locations inaccessible by motor vehicle.
Hells Canyon offers outdoor activities such as hiking and traveling upon the great Snake River that carved the canyon. Many of the campsites littered about the Hells Canyon area offer access only from the Snake River or on foot, according to Go-Idaho.com. Ensure RV access before choosing a Hells Canyon campsite. Most RV parks offer RV hookups, such as appropriate power voltages and sewage.
Hells Canyon Parks on Oxbow Reservoir offers 24 separate campsites with RV hookups, states GoNorthwest.com. Cooperfield Park, also on Oxbow Reservoir, and Brownlee on the Bownlee Reservoir offer RV amenities and paved boat launches in addition to traditional camping facilities. The Hells Canyon National Recreation Area sites provide RV parking but lack hookups.
GoNorthwest.com recommends planning camping trips in season, roughly June to October or November, for the best weather and access. If you are planning a late-season trip, contact the United States Forest Service to ensure road access in desired camping areas. Rain and snow often leave camping areas inhospitable during offseason months in the Hells Canyon area.
Most Hells Canyon area campgrounds charge fees, typically about $10 a day per site, according to GoNorthwest.com. RV hookup fees and boat fees often incur additional costs. Contact desired campground for current pricing and availability. Many sites offer site reservations, though making reservations may require full or partial payment at the time of reservation.
The Hells Canyon area offers exciting opportunities for RV base camp camping. Boaters, cyclists and hikers planning to visit distant park locations often find easy camping access for tent camping. Making the RV a base camp allows for multiple-day excursions without carrying supplies needed for the entire trip. Simply lock unnecessary supplies within the RV, plan a circuitous route ending back at the RV, and enjoy the wonder and beauty contained within the Hells Canyon area of Idaho.
