Cycling is a very intensive activity, and sometimes, especially on more rural rides, accidents occur. In an accident, not only may your bike damage, you may also injure yourself. Falling off a bicycle onto a hard surface, or something more serious can result in a great deal of pain and discomfort to the rider, even broken bones in some cases. As a result, it is important to protect yourself when riding, and today there is a wide range of protective cycling clothing and body armour that you can buy.
Your bike might be worth a lot, but you are worth so much more, which is why it is very important to protect yourself. The first thing that you should do when planning a ride is make sure that you have the correct protective clothing for the route you?re taking.
Protective clothing is especially important when riding off road, as an accident here can result in painful consequences. On rural gravel tracks and muddy paths, you are more prone to falling off, slipping and losing grip, so body armour is essential. Protective cycling wear comes in all types, from thick, cushioned helmets to elbow and knee guards, so you get the best protection possible. The most important items are a solid helmet, boots and knee guards.
Hitting trees, rocks and even other cyclists are the most common accidents when riding, and quality and comfortable cycling clothing is essential to protect you. Modern cycling protective wear can be extremely light and comfortable, whilst offering good protection for your head, neck and joints. Modern cycling helmets offer ventilation and thick padding to increase comfort to the rider. These days, serious cyclists invest in a range of protective cycling clothing to protect them.
Nowadays, you can get cycling body armour jackets or even full body suits designed to provide greater body protection. They offer increased body coverage and are equipped with more secure and thicker padding. Some of the upper body protectors also include spine protectors made of metal reinforced plastic plates and comfortable foam padding, to protect the most vulnerable part of the body. Modern technology has enabled body armours to be also equipped with neck protectors that fit to helmets with visors.
Cycling body armour offers a wide range of sizes, accessories and extras to suit the rider. Depending on the rider, you have to choose different levels of protection and accessories as required. These effective body armours have now made cycling, which can be a dangerous sport, a more convenient and safe activity.

Is cycling a valid substitute for Jumping Jacks, Running on the Spot in Circuit Training?
I am following a home fitness regime which consists of a circuit. This circuit includes a handful of exercises which are not particularly practical in the flat I live in. Star Jumps/Jumping Jacks, Running on the Spot and any other jumping/crashing ones which may disturb the people downstairs are not really ideal. I do, however, cycle at least 40 minutes each day (Mon – Fri), to and from work. Is this a suitable alternative, or am I missing out on working certain muscles and should find somewhere else to do those specific exercises?
Answer
Cycling is a brilliant way to tone up your bum, thighs and calves not to mention that it is an intense cardio workout that will assist all over weight loss. You also have the added benefit of it being much kinder to your knees than running and you’re getting lots of fresh air!
You might want to do some upper body toning excercises such as crunches or the plank for your stomach, push ups for your chest and biceps and triceps dips for the backs of your arms. These can all be done fairly quietly and shouldn’t disturb the neighbours!
