Portland is Maine’s largest city, and it possesses a wealth of wintertime activities, both indoors and outdoors. As a diverse and lovely old seacoast town, Portland yields a multitude of cultural and recreational options for visitors. The city is proud of its New England heritage and offers a number of historic sites, as well as modern art galleries, innovative restaurants and beautiful natural resources. From skiing and snowshoeing to taking in a professional hockey game or visiting a museum, Portland is a traveler’s winter wonderland.
Snowy Maine boasts over 12,500 miles of pristine snowmobiling trails. The Maine Snowmobiling Association (MSA) enlists the support of the Maine Department of Conservation to maintain trails throughout the Portland region. Popular trails in the Portland area include Baxter State Park, the Moose River Area, Moosehead Lake and Rangeley Lake.
The Portland Ice Arena provides indoor ice skating on an NHL regulation-size ice surface from mid-June through May each year. The arena offers public skating, ice skating lessons, and ice hockey leagues for both children and adults. Outdoor ice skating lessons are also available through the City of Portland Parks and Recreation at the Riverside Municipal Golf Course, Deering Oaks Pond, Payson Park Pond and Breakwater School Pond.
Sledding is wintertime fun for all ages. Public sliding hills are available at Payson Park and the Eastern Promenade. Sledding is also an option at the Riverside Municipal Golf Course.
Portland Parks and Recreation staff lead classes in downhill skiing and snowboarding for children and adults at Payson Park. The Portland area is the ideal spot for would-be cross country skiiers, as well. Cross country skiing classes are available at Riverside Municipal Golf Course. The trails along the Presumpscot River include a beautiful 8K cross country skiing course. Several parks, including Oatnut Park, Fore River Park and the Mayor Baxter Woods, offer ideal cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter months.
When you and your family are ready to seek some indoor entertainment, Portland provides many exciting options. Take in a thrilling indoor hockey game, courtesy of Portland’s AHL team, the Portland Pirates. The Portland Children’s Museum promises loads of family fun, including hands-on exhibits and daily programs on arts, science and multicultural topics. Don’t miss the incredible view of the city through the museum’s unique Camera Obscura! Len Libby’s Homemade Candies offers daily tours of its factory, including delicious samples and a chance to glimpse a life-sized chocolate moose. The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad presents The Polar Express, a magical train excursion for all ages, from late November through the month of December.
