New Year – Same Old Story?

Posted on December 28, 2009 by Dave W

As the new year fast approaches, are you making a ‘New Year’s Resolution’?

Is it the same one you made last year? and the year before, and the year before that?

Why do so many of us fail to keep our promises we made to ourselves?

In my opinion, it is because we hadn’t really thought it through.

We decided we were going to ……(insert resolution here) but we didn’t really have a plan.

Maybe, we know we need help to achieve our goals, but don’t know where to look.

Or maybe we have looked but found that much information, it overwhelmed us.

I think, that the main problem with new years resolutions are, so many people say they are going to start one, but they don’t really want, and are not prepared for the hard work involved.

How many people do you know who are stopping smoking on January 1st?

I managed to stop smoking around 5 years ago, I had smoked for 11 years and stopped for 14 years before starting again for 8 years.

I know how stupid starting again after 14 years was, but it seemed like a good idea at the time, and I could control it and stop at anytime I wanted.

What a load of rubbish!

You convince yourself, you are in control, but really you are not.

I tried on quite a few January 1St’s to stop, and eventually with the help of my children I succeeded.

They were to be a major influence in my fight against nicotine, but I knew I would need more help.

I wrote down my targets and went to my local health centre for advice.

I got some patches, and with a great deal of willpower I quit.

The battle with the weed doesn’t end there though, because imagine my distress, when 3 years after quiting, I found out my eldest daughter who was then 16, had started smoking.

I have never seen her smoke, but she does. She says she wants to quit, but she doesn’t.

I have reminded her of her pleadings with me when she didn’t want me to die, but to no avail.

Hopefully, she will make her own new years resolution and stick to it.

My own, is to lose around 7 pounds in time for my forthcoming wedding in April.

I have yet to sit down and work out exactly how I am going to do it, but my bike will be my greatest ally in this little battle.

If you have your own battle ahead of you, I wish you well, and remember, we can be our own worst enemies at times.
