My First 100

Posted on December 28, 2009 by Dave W

I will be posting my efforts in achieving my first 100 mile ride.

It is not going to be too easy on a mountain bike, especially being surrounded by the Pennines, but it will be achieved.

Feel free to comment on you own attempts at a century, or any tips you may have. It will help motivate me towards my own.

Still too much snow around to get the bike out. Managed 1 hour Saturday 2nd Jan on the spinning machine. Managed 90 minutes Thurs 7th Jan on the stationary bike.

90 minutes on an indoor bike seems like an eternity!
It was made worse when my mp3 players battery run out after 30 minutes.
Instead of being paced by Mary J Blige I found I was listening to the pounding of footsteps on the treadmill behind me.

The music channel on the gym’s tv was not inspiring me, and I found I really had to concentrate on what I was doing.

Recently, myself and my riding buddy, decided that it would be a good idea to do the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride before we do the 100.
I think it is about 60 miles, so that should be good practice.

    Dave,

I completed the Coast to Coast in March ’09. 165miles. My topthree tips.

    1. Get a PROPER bike! Apologies if this sounds obvious – but you wouldn’t believe how many people try to go on a real bike ride on a bike from Halfords! You can pick up a real decent entry bike for around £300 from all good Cycle Stores.

    2. Train, train, train. Get as many miles under your wheels as poss. Try all terrain. if you can climb a 20degree incline for an hour – you’re pretty much ready for anythin in the UK.

    3. Plenty of complex carbs. I burned 17’500 calories on my C2C. Last thing you need is fatigue.

    Hope this helps.

    Beau,
Thanks for your comments, any advice is appreciated.
Climbing a 20 degree incline for an hour sounds tough. Living on the Pennines though, means no shortage of hills.
I have a mountain bike, which I will get slick tyres, when we do the rides.
Until then most of my training will be done mainly off road and in the gym.

What food did you take with you to keep you going on your coast to coast?

    Thanks again for your help.

  4. Cycling Training

    hey Dave

Good on you for having a crack at your first century. With a bit of training you will have no problem with the distance. In all honesty it is 80% in the mind. You just need to get used to being on the bike for a long period of time. It’s as much mental as physical.

When you are thinking about your training I’m a strong believer in training in terms of time not distance. So you need to build up your longest ride in time terms 2 hours then 3 hours and so on. You can roughly increase this longest ride by 10-15 % per week.

I second the comment above about getting a road bike. A mountain bike even with skinny tyres on is not the same at all. The frame is heavier, the diameter of even skinny tyres are going to be much wider that a road bikes. You will REALLY noticve the extra rolling resistance from such tyres.

The bikes are also just not designed for speed. Your upright position means you encounter more wind resistance too. So would strongly recommend a road bike. You can buy a decent second hand one for £150+ if you check out Gumtree.com

Eventually I get to take my babe out. Actually I got to take both my babes out today!
My cycling partner and I managed our 1st ride. We did 23 miles with 97% being off road.

By the way, the babe I am talking about here is my bike, not my cycling partner!

My ‘real babe’ obviously is my soon to be wife and we have just got back from a couple of hours in the pub.

Back to the ride. We took it fairly easy as our normal route on the canal towpath was a little sticky in places.
It was just great to be able to get out on the bike, even though my fingertips felt numb.

Next time we will take it further, but still mainly off-road.

I have managed at least 2 rides a week for the past few weeks now.
Last week we increased one of our routes by an extra 9 miles.
4 of those miles were rather steep hills which seemed to last forever.
As soon as my riding partner finishes his extension we will be adding some endurance rides into our programme.
I don’t envisiage any problems doing our first 100 other than a sore backside.

    Keep Moving
    Dave W
