Learning About Protein Supplements

Posted on June 29, 2010 by Dave W

On those occasions when it is really quite impossible to get all of the nutrients you need from your daily diet, there are protein supplements, which not only provide protein, but many other vitamins and nutrients we all need each and every day. Protein supplements are a very healthy way to get the proper nutrition, and with so many types available, there is something to suit everyone’s tastes.

Protein Powders

One of the most popular types of protein supplements is protein powders. These are the most versatile type of supplements on the market today, because they can be used for so many things. For example, unflavored protein powders can be used to add protein and other nutrients to your favorite recipes, and your family, even the fussy eaters, won’t have a clue that you’re feeding them healthy food. There are also flavored protein powders that can be used to make delicious shakes and smoothies, which can be used as snacks or as meal replacements.

Liquid Proteins

Liquid proteins are also popular and they can come in forms that you can mix with milk or juice, or in pre-mixed drinks that you can buy anywhere and take with you when you are too busy to sit down and eat a healthy meal. You will find loads of protein-rich shakes and smoothies and all kinds of great flavors, including chocolate and vanilla. Liquid proteins are usually milk-based, so they are not always the best choice for those who are lactose intolerant, or who have allergies to milk and milk products.

Protein Snacks

Many people enjoy the protein snacks that are available, not only because they provide protein and other nutrients, but also because they are just plain great-tasting. There are protein bars that actually taste like chocolate bars and there are even high protein jerky snacks. It is important to read the ingredients and nutritional information on any protein snack you may want to try, especially protein bars, as they often have as many calories as a normal chocolate bar. There are others that are ideal for low-calorie weight loss diets.

If you are thinking about using protein supplements to get the nutrients you need in your diet, you should first consult with your physician. There are times when some people may have specific dietary requirements, especially if they have such health problems as diabetes or heart trouble. Your doctor will know what’s best for you.
