Aerobic exercise may not be what the hardcore bodybuilders are doing, but it is exactly what you need to maintain long term health in your body. The following are some of the numerous benefits that cycling can create in your body and life.
INCREASED CONCENTRATION
Activities that require balance, skill, and quick reactions can help with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in many children and will produce a more alert and focused mind. These activities include but are not limited to cycling of course, martial arts, gymnastics, and many others.
Studies have shown that people participating in activities like these (complex and very short exercises) were much more likely to be able to handle problems and solve puzzles then individuals who were idle and didn’t exercise. So if you ever stuck with the problem or something you can’t solve, take a nice bicycle ride to open up your mind.
The region of the brain called the hippocampus can be stimulated by regular exercise like cycling. Exercise makes the hippocampus grow just like the rest of your body’s muscles. It will also help you retain cognitive functions if you are older and help avoid disorders like dementia and Alzheimer’s.
LOWERS STRESS LEVELS
A vigorous effective and consistent exercise routine can reduce and possible eliminate the need for drugs like Zoloft and Prozac for people who suffer from anxiety disorders or depression. It has also been shown that people who keep a regular vigorous exercise routine are less likely to develop depression or any type of anxiety disorders. This has been shown to be the most effective when you are working out for at least twenty minutes and at sixty to ninety percent of your targeted maximum heart rate. It only took a few workouts for these people to start feeling measurable decreases in fear, anxiety, and sensitivity.
IT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY
Cycling is the perfect stress relief after a long hard day at the office. Less anger and reduced aggression have been linked to the outdoors and exposure to green scenery. Good luck in trying to spend all day outside in your running shoes. But you could easily spend all day outside with your friends cycling in the beauty of nature if you can find the right terrain to ride on.
INCREASES YOUR SELF ESTEEM AND IMAGE OF YOURSELF
Accomplishing or mastering something, like a task or job that we may find difficult will absolutely make us feel better about ourselves, this is according to psychologists and I happen to agree with them. The opposite is also true, that negative experiences or failing can make us feel bad about ourselves. Of course, this gives us all the more reason after having a bad day to get right back into the saddle as soon as possible. Aerobic exercise once again comes to the rescue in enhancing our own self-esteem in making us feel good mentally and physically at the same time.
Carrying excess weight can make your to all kinds of diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. This is according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Regular cycling can reduce excess weight your may be carrying and help in increasing your stamina in all types of activities.

How good is cycling when trying to get in shape?
I’ve recently started cycling to try and get in shape. I’ve been cycling at around 30mph for 40 minutes. How beneficial is this to me and helping me to get into shape and get fit?
Thanks for your help
Answer
40 minutes constant exercise is going to be good in any event.
On a bike at that speed…
That will likely have burned in the region of 7-900 calories, assuming you are about 140 lb.
You will have given your leg and lower back muscles a good workout, without too much impact on your joints.
To further gain, if you are not doing it already, it is worth getting ‘cages’ or toe clips for your bike, as, without them, you only really exert when you push down on the pedal. Clips also cause you to exert by pulling the pedal up, hence using different muscle groups.
the only down side of cycling is that, although it will burn fat all over, it does not do a great deal for upper body strength.
But keep it up!
