Las Vegas is home to three fly fishing clubs and three municipal and county fishing ponds stocked with bluegill, rainbow trout, catfish, large mouth bass, crappie and several varieties of sunfish. Lake Mead, only a short drive from Las Vegas, is another popular fishing spot in a part of the country where fishing is a year-round pastime.

The Las Vegas Fly Fishing Club has been in existence for 30 years. The club provides free or low cost seminars on fly fishing techniques and fish education and sponsors fishing outings. In recent years, the club has coordinated its monthly meetings, website and some activities with the Southern Nevada Chapter of Trout Unlimited, according to Nevada Department of Wildlife Aquatic Education Coordinator Ivy Santee.

The Lake Las Vegas Resort club offers residents and guests a catch-and-release fly fishing experience with an official Orvis fly fishing guide. The resort also provides accommodations for individuals and groups who participate in Lake Las Vegas Fly Fishing seminars. The private, stocked lake is available to guests of the resort.

The Southern Nevada Chapter of Trout Unlimited was founded about 12 years ago. The organization, which boasts 400 members, offers fly fishing clinics for beginners to advanced anglers, seminars and educational opportunities for members. The goal of the chapter is to improve cold water habitat for trout fishing throughout Nevada.

The Las Vegas Jr. Fly Fishing Club operates under the auspices of the Nevada Department of Wildlife and is open to anglers ages 7 to 20 and their families. The club is dedicated to encouraging families to try fly fishing. The club charges no annual fee, but donations are welcome. The Las Vegas Fly Fishing Club and the Southern Nevada Chapter of Trout Unlimited co-sponsor fishing tournaments, fishing classes and other family events.

All anglers are required to abide by regulations established by the Nevada Department of Wildlife regarding fishing licenses, daily fish limits, size limits and hours of operation for public facilities. The optimum urban pond season is November through March. Anglers age 12 and older must have a fishing license and a trout stamp to fish for trout in urban ponds.
