Indoor Cycling – How To Make It More Interesting

Indoor Cycling
Can be the only way you will get a decent workout over the coming months.
Depending on where you live you might be unable to get your bike out for weeks. For the pro’s and serious riders this time of year will be frustrating as they don’t want to be left too far behind when the new season starts.
For us mere mortals who use cycling as a means of fitness and enjoyment it can be equally frustrating. If you own an indoor bike or have access to one at your gym you will know that it can be a little tedious, especially with workouts lasting over an hour.
So, how can we make it more interesting? Well you could buy an eBook which gives you a few ideas. One that I got some ideas from was David Ertl’s Indoor Training For Cyclists.
Getting some ideas for indoor training is a good idea but why not create your own. I previously made a squidoo lens and put on it an article about how you can make your own training workouts check it out here….
But more recently I decided to try to replicate my real world cycling with my indoor cycling. It is really easy to do. All you need is a little imagination.
Let me give you an example and maybe you could do the same with one of your regular rides.
Each Thursday evening until the dark nights arrived, I and my riding partner did a 23 mile ride with some off-road and some on-road. It normally took us around two and a half hours with a little stop off for light refreshments J
On my first indoor session I decided I would try to replicate this ride on the indoor bike, and to my surprise the time flew by.
The trick here is to use a route that you are familiar with so you can visualise your surroundings. Here is how I visualised my route.
Start from home with an easy 5 minute warm-up to the meeting point.
10 minutes up the canal towpath with a quick burst for 20 seconds every 2 minutes. This simulates going up the locks.
We then go up a steady incline for around 10 minutes so I increased the resistance accordingly.
I did this for the remainder of my session following our route as best as I could remember, increasing and decreasing the resistance accordingly. I did miss out the stop for light refreshment and made do with my water bottle. Afterwards I felt I had a great workout and my mind wasn’t numb.
I am not sure if it will work all winter but we have done quite a few different routes so maybe I won’t get too bored with my indoor cycling.
If you have any tips on how to get through the winter months please share them with us here.
Keep Moving
