Garmin 310XT Watch Review Technology That Will Help You Win
Posted on November 28, 2011 by Dave W
The 310XT uses GPS to track your runs, rides and swims, but it adds so much more.
For triathlon this watch is the nuts and is far and away the best triathlon watch we’ve tested to date. It will sync with your bike’s ANT+ power meter and display watts as you pedal, but the auto-multisport mode also lets you switch from one sport to the next by hitting the lap button, and it times your transition zones as well for traithletes.
Perhaps the best feature is that you can swim with it and it alerts you through vibrations on your pacing – how cool is that? Swim, kayak, windsurf, surf, and do any water sport you like because it can take it.
Setting this watch up is easy. Turn it on and the watch walks you through questions and inputs all of your basic data – height, weight, age, etc.
While it works great as a heart rate monitor and syncs with power meters, it will also syncs with Garmin’s cadence sensors to track your RPM readout, and to a foot pod if you want to measure your running cadence on a treadmill or the trail.
Overall the watch is easy to use once you have gone through basic set up.
Another cool feature allows you to change bike setups for mountain and road bike set-ups making the watch ideal for adventure sports as well.
The Garmin 310 XT tracks just about every piece of workout data you’ll ever need to know, gives you instant feedback and keeps a history file on the watch that can also upload to Garmin Connect for later analysis through the watches wireless sync feature. Power, calories, heart rate, speed, cadence, distance, elevation and many other metrics are immediately accessible.
This is one tool that will make your workouts really count. Set up your anerobic threshold workouts right in the watch.
The vibrating alarm lets you know when you’ve gone certain distances or drop out of heart rate, cadence, or speed zones. It will even vibrate on your wrist if you aren’t swimming at your meters per minute pace. How cool is that? The type of feedback is awesome because it keeps you from having to glance at the watch, which is great for cyclists traveling at high speed because you need to pay attention to the road. It also allows you listen to tunes and still stay informed.
When you do want to look at the watch you can customize the display with up to four data fields for each screen, and swap between multiple screen presets so you can keep your most important data like speed, heart rate, time and distance on one screen. You can move to a secondary screen to get metrics like elevation, grade and calories burned.
Since you have four screens per sport you can track up to 16 metrics for each sport. Several new features like heart rate graphing, power tracking, and nautical speed and distance tracking provide real time data you can use.
The watch is supposed to last for 20 hours on a single charge and can be re-charged through a wall plug or your computers USB cable.
This Forerunner is designed to wirelessly sync your workouts with the Garmin Connect website. The ability to graph, measure and compare workouts is tremendous.
We’d rate the new Garmin 310XT as the best new exercise watch technology ever – a bold statement that we feel the watch can back up. The Garmin 310XT best fits serious triathletes, swimmers, and runners to a tee.
Cyclists may find the Garmin Edge 705 Team Edition better for pure cycling but the 310 XT can quite easily replace a bike computer with the only exception being the navigation function.
