Creating Healthy Meals And Your 5 A day

Posted on September 12, 2010 by Dave W

Have you realised that eating healthily is probably – along with regular exercise – the best thing you could do for yourself?

Eating healthy is a great way to lose weight, get in shape and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. If you are looking to eat healthy, you can easily create healthy meals. Here are some great tips on creating healthy meals.

Creating healthy meals is extremely easy and starts with healthy, fresh ingredients. Try to add lots of vegetables into your meal. My wife does amazing things with courgettes (oh, please behave). The more vegetables you eat the more great vitamins and minerals you receive. Vegetables are also lower in calories than most other types of foods, because they contain lots of healthy fibre. Obviously, if you fry them or roast them in lots of oil you can expect the calorie intake to increase.

If you are familiar with the recommendations made by the World Health Organisation (WHO) you will have heard about the 5 a day theory.

It is not quite as simple as eating 5 apples or 5 tomatoes, and potatoes don’t count because they are starch foods.

So, what do I have to do to get my 5 a day then, I hear you ask.

The World Health Organization, recommends eating a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables a day to lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Roughly speaking it is recommended you eat 5 small portions (80g each) of fruit and veg a day. For more information on portion sizes go to the NHS website.

If you like eating meats, choose leaner meats such as poultry, and certain cuts of pork. Chicken and turkey are extremely low in fat and if they are grilled or roasted without the skin they make any excellent lean dish. Chicken is extremely versatile and you can cook it with almost any type of meal.

Fish is also a great source of vitamins and minerals. Most people don’t eat enough fish in their diet and fish such as tuna, salmon and flounder can be great additions to your diet.

If you are still drinking soda, switch to fresh juice, or other drinks that aren’t filled with so much sugar and calories. As you can see, it is easy to create a healthy meal.

Alcohol is ok, but only in moderation. It is quite easy to consume a full days worth of calories in one evening of celebration. It would be best to use such nights out as a treat for all your hard work during the previous weeks.

If you have a busy social life, try to stick to low calorie drinks or to cut your consumption down by half.

Keep Moving
